— Mi hanno descritto in tantissimi modi. È difficile trovare un aggettivo nuovo ma ci provo. Spirituale secondo me è un aggettivo che non hanno mai usato forse perché non lo mostro, ma credo che tutto abbia un senso, anche quando non si vede.
Cosa ti porti dentro della tua terra, la Calabria, che nessuna telecamera è riuscita a raccontare?
— Il silenzio. Quel silenzio delle montagne e del mare insieme. Il silenzio della natura che si rispecchia tanto in me.
C’è un momento della tua infanzia che ancora oggi ti protegge?
— I racconti, i detti e i proverbi dei miei nonni sono delle protezioni tutt’oggi per me. Ascolto i loro consigli a distanza di anni anche se non ci sono più, e per me quelle sono protezioni.
Cosa hai perso nel momento esatto in cui sei diventato “personaggio”?
— L’invisibilità. Molte volte riflettevo che l’anonimato valesse più della notorietà.
C’è stato un giorno in cui hai pensato di mollare tutto? Cosa ti ha fatto restare?
— Più di un giorno. Ci sono stati giorni in cui ero sull’orlo dell’abbandonare tutto. Poi mi guardavo intorno, capivo che anche quei momenti difficili fanno parte della crescita personale e della realizzazione dei sogni. Devo anche ringraziare le tantissime persone che credono in me, che come ho ripetuto, grazie al loro sostegno e supporto mi danno la forza per non mollare.
Quanto fa paura mostrarsi per davvero in un mondo che applaude solo le versioni più patinate?
— Tanta. Perché quando ti mostri per davvero, sei senza filtri, senza difese. Però sto sempre bene con me stesso.
Hai mai avuto la sensazione che la tua gentilezza sia stata scambiata per debolezza?
— No. Non penso. La gentilezza è un mio punto forte.
Hai mai provato una delusione che ti ha fatto rimettere in discussione la fiducia negli altri?
— Essere deluso da chi pensavo fosse “famiglia”. Quando crolla qualcuno che avevi messo al centro, ti senti perso e quella ferita si allarga in silenzio, ti fa sentire solo anche se hai persone intorno. Ma proprio da lì ho imparato ad ascoltarmi, a contare su di me e a distinguere chi c’è davvero da chi c’è solo quando conviene.
Sai ancora fidarti delle persone senza pensare che possano volerti usare?
— Sono un uomo che cerca di vedere nell’altra persona sempre i lati positivi. Sono stato un tipo che si è fidato sempre e in molte occasioni sono stato “tradito”, adesso ho poca fiducia, quasi niente.
Quando ti senti davvero al sicuro? Cos’è, per te, sicurezza? Un luogo? Uno sguardo? O forse un silenzio ben preciso?
— La sicurezza per me non è un luogo. Io la trovo negli sguardi. Ti faccio un esempio: molte volte mi è capitato di presentare eventi, parlare davanti a tanta gente, sia per l’emozione che per sentirmi al sicuro cercavo la sicurezza nello sguardo di un amico, familiare o conoscente e da lì prendevo forza e ancor di più sicurezza.
Chi è Giuseppe quando si chiude la porta di casa e rimane solo?
— Giuseppe quando chiude la porta di casa la prima domanda che si fa è: che risultati hai portato a casa? Cosa hai imparato? E poi da lì nascono o meno i complessi, e quando sono solo passo dall’essere scrittore (di quello che mi capita, raccontandomi, di quello che voglio fare e come fare) all’uomo più pigro. Sono un uomo semplice, ultimamente pensieroso.
Hai un sogno segreto che non hai mai confessato pubblicamente?
— Sono in tanti a conoscere i miei sogni, ma qualcuno nascosto c’è.
La fama dà tanto, ma chiede interessi altissimi. Qual è stato il prezzo più salato che hai pagato per essere “Giuseppe Garibaldi” fuori dalla casa?
— Il prezzo più alto è stato perdere la leggerezza. Quella di dire una cosa al volo senza doverla spiegare mille volte, o di vivere un momento senza pensare a come verrà percepito. Ogni parola pesa, ogni gesto viene messo sotto lente, sotto giudizio. Se sbagli a parlare sei un analfabeta, se sbagli a fare sei un incapace. E il rischio è che la gente dimentichi che sei umano, che sbagli.
Cosa c’è in te che il pubblico ha amato a prima vista e cosa invece ha frainteso con ostinazione?
— Credo che abbiano apprezzato subito il mio modo semplice di essere: uno che non si costruisce addosso, che parla come mangia e che non si prende troppo sul serio. Quello che invece molti hanno frainteso? La stessa cosa: la semplicità. C’è chi l’ha scambiata per ingenuità, chi per strategia, chi per “eh ma tanto fa il buono”. Ma io sono così anche quando non mi guarda nessuno. Non sono perfetto, ma non sono neanche un copione scritto a tavolino. E a quanto pare, essere normali oggi… fa strano.
Se potessi scegliere chi leggerti davvero tra le righe, chi vorresti ti capisse una volta per tutte?
— Ti potrei dire mia madre, ma lei mi legge bene.
Di tutto quello che ti hanno detto, bene o male, qual è la frase che, in silenzio, hai portato a letto con te più di una volta?
— “Torna a fare il bidello o tagliati i capelli.” Me lo sento dire talmente tante di quelle volte che sembra una suoneria del telefono che squilla in continuazione. Certa gente per invidia e gelosia sta sempre sul punto di denigrare. Non vogliono che mi metta in gioco, studi, impari e faccia quello che mi piace.
GG Moda Patriottica: perché “patriottica”? Cosa rappresenta per te questo progetto, oltre al business?
— Perché è un’appartenenza alle radici, alla fierezza di essere quello che sono e da dove vengo. Un legame con la mia terra, che parte da Santa Cristina, dalla Calabria, all’Italia. “Patriottica” non è una parola, ma un sentimento.
Qual è il messaggio che vuoi trasmettere attraverso il tuo brand e i contenuti che condividi?
— Ho creato il brand con l’intenzione che ggmodapatriottica diventasse uno stile di vita. I messaggi che mando attraverso i prodotti sono tanti ma c’è uno in particolare: ogni imperfezione non è da considerarsi un difetto, ma un pregio.
Hai una fanbase molto attiva e affettuosa. Ti senti responsabile del tipo di messaggi che passi?
— Assolutamente sì. Io non voglio e non devo piacere, devo lasciare un qualcosa, anche piccolo ma vero.
Hai mai pensato di raccontarti in modo diverso? Un libro, un documentario, un progetto sociale?
— Fino a oggi no.
Ti piacerebbe tornare in TV, ma con un format che ti rappresenti davvero? Se sì, come lo immagini?
— Sto studiando proprio per questo: voglio tornare davanti alle telecamere, ma con un ruolo che mi rappresenti davvero. Mi appassiona, mi diverte, e anche se non si vede, scrivo idee, format, invento, creo. Ho tanta roba in testa, ma devo metterla in pratica e dimostrare che sono in grado.
Cosa ti piacerebbe che la gente dicesse di te fra 10 anni?
— Vorrei sentirmi dire: ho fatto bene a credere in te, ne è valsa la pena. Ti dico ciò per due motivi: sia perché vuol dire che ho raggiunto i miei obiettivi e sia perché la gente che oggi crede in me, non si pentirà di avermi seguito e sostenuto in questi anni.
Se potessi scrivere oggi una lettera al Giuseppe che entrerà in futuro in un nuovo progetto importante, cosa gli diresti?
— Caro Peppe, finalmente il momento è arrivato. Ti ricordi quando tutto è iniziato? Quante paure, quante insicurezze ma anche tantissima voglia di provarci e metterti in gioco? Adesso che hai l’opportunità, prendila. Fallo e fallo bene. Divertiti e fai divertire come tu sai fare. Sii te stesso. Se sbagli prenditi in giro, ridi e ricordati quanto vali. Non perdere mai quella voglia di sognare in grande. Questo è solo l’inizio: il meglio deve ancora venire. Solo cose belle.
Nel mondo dell’apparenza, l’autenticità è un atto sovversivo. Quando è stata l’ultima volta che hai scelto di essere vero, anche se costava caro?
— Essere veri non è una scelta, è una qualità: o lo sei o non lo sei. Nel bene e nel male lo sono sempre stato. A volte il prezzo è costato caro, altre no, ma preferisco pagare.
Se il pubblico potesse leggerti come un libro, quale sarebbe il capitolo che nasconderesti tra le pieghe della copertina?
— Non nasconderei nessun capitolo. Se nascondi un capitolo vuol dire che proprio quello vale più degli altri. Che sia bello o meno bello, resta parte della storia, ma è un capitolo. E lì dentro ci sono emozioni, paure, gioie, rabbie, delusioni, vittorie, sconfitte, tutte cose che rendono quel libro unico, vero e speciale.
Qual è stato il momento più buio della tua vita e come hai trovato la forza per attraversarlo?
— Uno dei momenti più bui della mia vita è stato quando sono venuto a conoscenza dei problemi di salute di mamma. Quando si tratta di salute il resto vale zero.
Oggi, se ti fermi un attimo e ti ascolti davvero: sei felice?
— Sono sereno, a tratti felice.
Essere Giuseppe, davvero

If you had to describe yourself with one word that no one ever uses for you, what would it be?
— I’ve been described in many ways. It’s hard to find a new word, but I’ll try. Spiritual is a word no one’s ever used, probably because I don’t show it much. But I believe everything happens for a reason, even when it’s not visible.
What do you carry within you from your homeland, Calabria, that no camera has ever captured?
— Silence. The silence of the mountains and the sea together. The silence of nature that reflects so much of who I am.
Is there a moment from your childhood that still protects you today?
— The stories, sayings, and proverbs of my grandparents still protect me today. I still listen to their advice even though they’re no longer here. For me, those words are shields.
What did you lose the moment you became a “public figure”?
— Invisibility. I often think that anonymity is worth more than fame.
Was there ever a day when you thought about giving it all up? What made you stay?
— More than one. There were days when I was on the verge of giving up. Then I’d look around and realize that even the hardest moments are part of personal growth and reaching your dreams. I also have to thank the many people who believe in me. Their support gives me the strength not to quit.
How scary is it to show your true self in a world that only applauds the polished version?
— Very. Because when you’re truly yourself, you’re unfiltered, defenseless. But I always feel good about who I am.
Have you ever felt that your kindness was mistaken for weakness?
— No, I don’t think so. Kindness is one of my strengths.
Have you ever faced a disappointment that made you question your trust in others?
— Being let down by someone I considered “family.” When someone you’ve placed at the center of your life crumbles, you feel lost, and that wound quietly spreads. Even if you’re surrounded by people, you feel alone. But from that pain, I learned to listen to myself, to rely on myself, and to distinguish who’s truly there from who’s only around when it benefits them.
Can you still trust people without fearing they’ll try to use you?
— I try to always see the positive in others. I’ve always been someone who trusts, and I’ve been betrayed many times. Now, I trust very little—almost not at all.
When do you feel truly safe? What is security to you? A place? A look? A particular kind of silence?
— Security isn’t a place to me. I find it in people’s eyes. I’ll give you an example: when I present events or speak in front of a crowd, I often look for the eyes of a friend, a family member, or someone I know. That gaze gives me strength—and confidence.
Who is Giuseppe when the door closes and you’re alone at home?
— The first question I ask myself is: What did you accomplish today? What did you learn? From there, either peace comes—or overthinking. When I’m alone, I go from being a writer (of what’s happened to me, what I want to do, and how to do it) to being the laziest man alive. I’m a simple man—lately, a thoughtful one.
Do you have a secret dream you’ve never revealed?
— Many people know my dreams. But yes, there are some hidden ones.
Fame gives a lot, but demands high interest. What has been the highest price you’ve paid for being “Giuseppe Garibaldi” outside the house?
— Losing my lightness. That ease of speaking freely without having to explain yourself a hundred times. The freedom to live a moment without wondering how it’ll be perceived. Every word carries weight. Every gesture is judged. If you misspeak, you’re labeled ignorant. If you make a mistake, you’re incompetent. People forget you’re human—that you mess up too.
What did the audience love about you at first sight—and what did they most misunderstand?
— I think they loved my simplicity right away: someone who doesn’t put on a mask, who speaks plainly, who doesn’t take himself too seriously. What did they misunderstand? That same simplicity. Some thought it was naivety, some thought it was strategy, some thought, “He’s just pretending to be the good guy.” But I’m like this even when no one’s watching. I’m not perfect—but I’m not scripted either. And apparently, being normal these days… is weird.
If you could choose someone to truly read between your lines, who would you want to understand you once and for all?
— I could say my mother—but she already reads me just fine.
Of all the things people have said—good or bad—what’s the one phrase you’ve taken to bed with you more than once?
— “Go back to being a janitor or cut your hair.” I hear it so often it’s like a ringtone playing nonstop. Some people, out of jealousy or envy, always try to tear you down. They don’t want you to grow, study, learn, or do what you love.
GG Moda Patriottica: Why “Patriotic”? What does this project mean to you beyond business?
— Because it’s about belonging—to my roots, to the pride of who I am and where I come from. A connection to my land, from Santa Cristina, Calabria, to Italy. “Patriotic” isn’t just a word—it’s a feeling.
What message do you want to send through your brand and your content?
— I created the brand with the idea that GG Moda Patriottica could become a way of life. The message I want to send is that every imperfection isn’t a flaw—it’s a strength.
You have a very active and affectionate fanbase. Do you feel responsible for the kind of messages you share?
— Absolutely. I don’t want or need to be liked—I want to leave something behind, even something small, but true.
Have you ever thought of telling your story in a different way? A book, a documentary, a social project?
— Not until now.
Would you like to return to TV, but with a format that truly represents you? If so, how do you imagine it?
— I’m studying for that very reason. I want to return to television, but with a role that truly reflects me. I’m passionate about it, I enjoy it. And even if it’s not obvious, I write ideas, create formats, invent, imagine. I have a lot in my head—but now it’s time to make it real and prove I can do it.
What do you hope people will say about you in 10 years?
— I hope to hear: “I was right to believe in you—it was worth it.” I say that for two reasons: because it would mean I’ve reached my goals, and because the people who believe in me today won’t regret supporting me.
If you could write a letter to the future Giuseppe who’s about to enter an important project, what would you tell him?
— Dear Peppe, the time has finally come. Remember when it all started? So much fear, so many insecurities, but also a burning desire to try, to throw yourself into it. Now that the chance is here—take it. Do it, and do it well. Have fun, and make others have fun, the way only you know how. Be yourself. If you mess up, laugh it off. And never forget your worth. Don’t ever stop dreaming big. This is just the beginning—the best is yet to come. Only beautiful things.
In a world of appearances, authenticity is a radical act. When was the last time you chose to be real—even though it cost you something?
— Being real isn’t a choice. It’s a quality—you either are, or you’re not. For better or worse, I’ve always been real. Sometimes it’s cost me, sometimes it hasn’t. But I’d rather pay the price.
If the public could read you like a book, what chapter would you hide in the folds of the cover?
— I wouldn’t hide any chapter. If you hide a chapter, it probably means it’s the most valuable one. Whether beautiful or painful, it’s still part of the story—and in there are emotions, fears, joys, anger, disappointments, victories, defeats. All the things that make that book unique, real, and special.
What’s been the darkest moment of your life, and how did you find the strength to get through it?
— One of the darkest times was when I found out about my mom’s health problems. When health is at stake, everything else is meaningless.
Today, if you stop and truly listen to yourself—are you happy?
— I’m at peace. At times, happy.
