“Gentle Monster” is one of the most talked-about films of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer and presented in Official Competition for the Palme d’Or, the film tackles one of the most delicate and disturbing subjects of recent years: the emotional and familial consequences of accusations involving child sexual abuse material.
The film stars Léa Seydoux as Lucy, a musician and mother who moves to the Bavarian countryside with her husband Philip and their son. The family’s seemingly perfect balance collapses when Philip is arrested by police during an investigation into the possession of child abuse images. From that moment on, the film abandons the structure of a traditional thriller and transforms into an emotional exploration of trauma, doubt and psychological fracture.
Alongside Seydoux is Catherine Deneuve in the role of Lucy’s mother, a central figure supporting her while she struggles to understand whether the man she loves is truly guilty or not.
International critics are describing “Gentle Monster” as one of the coldest and most disturbing films screened on the Croisette this year. Reuters highlighted how Marie Kreutzer deliberately avoided offering simple or comforting answers, focusing instead on the people surrounding the accused and on the invisible fractures such an event creates in everyday life.
Many critics have also linked the film to the real-life case involving actor Florian Teichtmeister in 2023, who portrayed Emperor Franz Joseph in “Corsage”, Kreutzer’s previous film. Following the scandal, the director publicly spoke about the pain of seeing a collective artistic work “contaminated by the actions of a single person.” Many are interpreting “Gentle Monster” as an indirect reflection on that professional and human trauma as well.
From a stylistic perspective, the film continues the Austrian director’s rigorous and controlled cinematic language: icy cinematography, long silences, constant tension and a narrative that deliberately rejects sensationalism. The true center of the story is not the crime itself, but the emotional collapse of those left behind.
On the premiere red carpet, the film attracted enormous media attention thanks to the presence of Cara Delevingne, Léa Seydoux and Catherine Deneuve, turning “Gentle Monster” into one of the most photographed events of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

Protagonista è Léa Seydoux nei panni di Lucy, musicista e madre di famiglia che si trasferisce nella campagna bavarese insieme al marito Philip e al figlio. L’equilibrio apparentemente perfetto della famiglia viene distrutto quando la polizia arresta Philip nell’ambito di un’indagine per possesso di immagini di abusi su minori. Accanto a Seydoux c’è anche Catherine Deneuve nel ruolo della madre della protagonista, figura centrale nel sostenere Lucy mentre cerca di capire se l’uomo che ama sia davvero colpevole o meno.
La critica internazionale sta parlando di “Gentle Monster” come di uno dei film più freddi e disturbanti passati sulla Croisette quest’anno. Reuters sottolinea come Marie Kreutzer abbia volutamente evitato qualsiasi risposta semplice o consolatoria, concentrandosi invece sulle persone che vivono accanto all’accusato e sulle crepe invisibili che un evento simile apre nella vita quotidiana.
Molti critici stanno inoltre collegando il film al caso reale che nel 2023 coinvolse l’attore Florian Teichtmeister, interprete dell’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe in “Corsage”, precedente film della stessa Kreutzer. Dopo lo scandalo, la regista aveva parlato pubblicamente del dolore nel vedere un’opera collettiva “contaminata dalle azioni di una singola persona”. In molti leggono “Gentle Monster” anche come una riflessione indiretta su quel trauma professionale e umano.
Dal punto di vista stilistico, il film continua il cinema rigoroso e controllato della regista austriaca: fotografia glaciale, silenzi lunghi, tensione costante e una narrazione che rifiuta volutamente il sensazionalismo. Il vero centro del racconto non è il crimine, ma il crollo emotivo di chi resta.
