The seventh edition of the Matera International Film Festival was officially presented at the Cannes Film Festival, further confirming the Lucanian festival’s ambition to build an international dialogue between cinema, territory and new audiovisual productions. The presentation took place at the Italian Pavilion of the Cannes Film Festival, one of the most important spaces dedicated to Italian cinema on the Croisette.
The festival will take place in Matera from September 26 to October 4, 2026, bringing screenings, meetings, workshops and activities dedicated to emerging international cinema to the city of the Sassi. Among the main new projects announced is also “MAMA”, a new international film market created to support independent authors and young filmmakers.
Great attention was also given to this year’s theme:
“Mediterranean, Mirror of the World.”
A concept designed to present the Mediterranean not only as a geographical place, but as a cultural, identity-driven and cinematic space capable of connecting languages, stories and different countries.
Among the key figures at the Cannes presentation was also Valentina Castellani-Quinn, the festival’s artistic director and an international producer based between Italy and the United States. During the meeting, she spoke about the need to “reinvent Italian cinema” through new international collaborations and greater attention toward contemporary independent cinema.
The conference was also attended by Leonardo Fuina, founder and president of the festival, Joyce Pierpoline, jury president and director of the BAFTA Awards, as well as Simona Orsi, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Matera. The event was introduced by actress Ester Pantano, godmother of the previous edition.
In recent years, MATIFF has been positioning itself as one of the Italian festivals most focused on internationalization, also leveraging Matera’s strong cinematic appeal — a city that, after its international success linked to cinema and television productions, continues to strengthen its global cultural image.
È stata presentata al Festival di Cannes la settima edizione del Matera International Film Festival, confermando sempre di più la volontà del festival lucano di costruire un dialogo internazionale tra cinema, territorio e nuove produzioni audiovisive. La presentazione si è svolta all’Italian Pavilion del Festival di Cannes, uno degli spazi più importanti dedicati al cinema italiano all’interno della Croisette.
Il festival si terrà a Matera dal 26 settembre al 4 ottobre 2026 e porterà nella città dei Sassi proiezioni, incontri, workshop e attività dedicate al cinema internazionale emergente. Tra le principali novità annunciate c’è anche “MAMA”, nuovo mercato cinematografico internazionale pensato per sostenere autori indipendenti e giovani filmmaker.
Grande attenzione anche al tema scelto per questa edizione: “Mediterraneo, specchio del mondo”.
Un concetto che vuole raccontare il Mediterraneo non soltanto come luogo geografico, ma come spazio culturale, identitario e cinematografico capace di mettere in dialogo linguaggi, storie e Paesi diversi.
Tra i protagonisti della presentazione a Cannes anche Valentina Castellani-Quinn, direttrice artistica del festival e produttrice internazionale con base tra Italia e Stati Uniti. Durante l’incontro ha parlato della necessità di “reinventare il cinema italiano” attraverso nuove collaborazioni internazionali e maggiore attenzione al cinema indipendente contemporaneo.
Alla conferenza hanno partecipato anche Leonardo Fuina, fondatore e presidente del festival, Joyce Pierpoline, presidente di giuria e direttrice dei BAFTA Awards, oltre all’assessore alla cultura del Comune di Matera Simona Orsi. L’incontro è stato introdotto dall’attrice Ester Pantano, madrina della scorsa edizione.
Negli ultimi anni il MATIFF sta cercando di posizionarsi come uno dei festival italiani più orientati all’internazionalizzazione, sfruttando anche il forte richiamo cinematografico di Matera, città che dopo il successo internazionale legato a cinema e serialità continua a rafforzare la propria immagine culturale globale.
