The competition born from the memory of Francesco Valdiserri returns with a new edition dedicated to Generation Z, chaired by Valerio Mastandrea.
Behind certain projects there is no marketing, no calculation, no need to occupy a space in the calendar of cultural events. There is a story, a pain so deep that it must find a new form in order not to remain silent.
24 Frame Al Secondo was born exactly from that place. It is not simply a short film competition, but one of the most genuine cultural initiatives to emerge in Italy in recent years, a place where memory meets young talent and cinema returns to being what it should always be: vision, possibility, future.
The project was created by Luca Valdiserri and Paola Di Caro, journalists for Corriere della Sera, together with the cultural association Controchiave of Rome. At its core lies the tragedy that marked their family: the loss of their son Francesco, who passed away in 2022 at only 18 years old. Francesco was a young man in love with life, culture, music and cinema. He looked toward the future with the natural hunger of someone who still had everything ahead of him.
After such a loss, many would stop. Luca and Paola, instead, chose another path, transforming that pain into something that could serve others. Paola explained it with heartbreaking words while speaking during La Terrazza della Dolce Vita in Rimini: “I have no time for hatred, no time for revenge. I want love. Francesco was love, and that is how he must be remembered: through beautiful, vital things.” And again: “I have no time for hatred. I only want love. My son was love.”
In those words lies the very heart of the project. After such a tragedy, one does not return to who they once were. One tries, perhaps, to stitch life back together with difficulty. A life made of projects, memory turned into action so as not to go mad with grief. From that choice came 24 Frame Al Secondo , a competition dedicated to young filmmakers born after January 1, 2000, created to offer space and future to those who are Francesco’s age, or just a little older.
The name recalls the 24 Frame Al Secondo of classic cinema. It is a perfect title, technical and poetic at once. Here, cinema is not only artistic language, but movement, breath, possibility.
Many competitions speak about young people. This one truly places them at the center. It does not use them as a slogan, does not observe them from afar, does not reduce them to statistics. It invites them to tell their stories through a camera lens, that is, through a gaze.
The first edition, in 2024, already showed the seriousness of the project. The final was held at Cinema Troisi in Rome, another symbolic place of contemporary culture, and the jury presidency was entrusted to Paolo Virzì, one of the most respected directors in Italian cinema.
In 2025, the project grew further. The chosen theme was “Destination Love – Feelings in the Age of Generation Z,” a title capable of capturing fluid relationships, new fragilities, the need for connection and contemporary loneliness. The numbers spoke clearly: more than 433 works submitted, with around 300 international entries. The final moved to the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, a clear sign of an event now fully recognized, while the jury presidency was entrusted to Paola Cortellesi, a beloved artist and symbol of popular quality and cultural commitment.
Today, that journey reaches a new decisive step. The third edition of 24 Frame Al Secondo takes place on May 3, 4 and 5, 2026 at Cinema Nuovo Sacher in Rome, the historic theater linked to Nanni Moretti. This is not a mere logistical detail, but a powerful symbolic step. Nuovo Sacher has long represented Italian auteur cinema, artistic rigor and freedom of vision. Hosting the finals there means recognizing the value of the project.
Presiding over this year’s jury will be Valerio Mastandrea, actor and director among the most respected in Italian cinema, an artist capable of combining popularity, depth and constant attention to younger voices.
The title chosen for this edition may be the most urgent of all: “My Battle – The Conflict Outside and Within for Generation Z.” A title that captures with precision the time we live in. It speaks of widespread anxiety, identities still being built, social pressure, uncertain futures, inner wars and the need to be heard. It is a deeply contemporary theme that transforms the festival into something more than a competition: an emotional observatory of the present.
The finals program includes three intense days of screenings featuring the best semifinalist short films, finalist works in competition, out-of-competition entries, special mentions, awards ceremonies and international films. From the selected titles emerges a vast creative universe: generational discomfort, toxic relationships, alienation, social anger, irony, love, identity, emptiness and the search for oneself.
Perhaps the most moving phrase remains the one told by Francesco’s mother: “Francesco always used to say: ‘I would like to leave a mark.’ We keep him alive this way, by lighting up our son through caring for others.”
Within these words lies the true soul of 24 Frame Al Secondo. Not a memorial frozen in the past, but a spark that keeps moving. This project performs a far more meaningful act: it places a camera in their hands, making them authors rather than subjects of discussion.
And perhaps this is the greatest value of the idea born from Luca Valdiserri and Paola Di Caro: having transformed pain into possibility, memory into movement, absence into future.
Born from the memory of Francesco, today the project lives as a free space for hundreds of young directors searching for their first gaze upon the world.
And perhaps there is no greater tribute than this: when a life cut short continues to open roads for others.
Il concorso nato dal ricordo di Francesco Valdiserri torna con una nuova edizione dedicata alla Generazione Z, presieduta da Valerio Mastandrea.
Dietro certi progetti non c’è marketing, non c’è calcolo, non c’è la necessità di occupare uno spazio nel calendario delle rassegne. C’è una storia, un dolore così grande da dover trovare una forma nuova per non restare muto.
24 Frame al Secondo nasce esattamente da lì. Non è soltanto un concorso di cortometraggi, ma una delle iniziative culturali più vere emerse negli ultimi anni in Italia, un luogo in cui la memoria incontra i giovani talenti e il cinema torna a essere ciò che dovrebbe sempre essere, visione, possibilità, futuro.
Il progetto è stato ideato da Luca Valdiserri e Paola Di Caro, giornalisti del Corriere della Sera, insieme all’Associazione culturale Controchiave di Roma. Alla base c’è la tragedia che ha segnato la loro famiglia: la perdita del figlio Francesco, scomparso nel 2022 a soli 18 anni. Francesco era un ragazzo innamorato della vita, della cultura, della musica, del cinema. Guardava al futuro con la naturale fame di chi ha ancora tutto davanti.
Dopo una perdita simile, molti si fermerebbero. Luca e Paola, invece, hanno scelto di trasformare quel dolore in qualcosa che potesse servire ad altri. Lo ha spiegato Paola, con parole che spaccano il cuore, intervenendo durante La Terrazza della Dolce Vita a Rimini: “Non ho tempo per odiare, non ho tempo di vendette. Io voglio amore. Francesco era amore e così deve essere ricordato: con cose belle, vitali.” E ancora: “Non ho tempo per l’odio. Io voglio solo amore. Mio figlio era amore.”
In quelle parole c’è il cuore stesso del progetto. Dopo una tragedia simile non si torna quelli di prima, si prova semmai a ricucire una vita a fatica. Una vita fatta di progetti, memoria che diventa azione per non impazzire di dolore. Da questa scelta nasce 24 Frame al Secondo, concorso dedicato ai giovani filmmaker nati dopo il 1° gennaio 2000, pensato per offrire spazio e futuro a chi ha la stessa età di Francesco, o poco più.
Il nome richiama i 24 fotogrammi al secondo, il ritmo classico del cinema. È un titolo perfetto, tecnico e poetico insieme. Qui il cinema non è solo linguaggio artistico, ma movimento, respiro, possibilità.
Molti concorsi parlano dei giovani. Questo, invece, li mette davvero al centro. Non li usa come slogan, non li osserva da lontano, non li riduce a statistica, li invita a raccontarsi attraverso una macchina da presa, cioè attraverso uno sguardo.
La prima edizione, nel 2024, ha già mostrato la serietà del progetto. La finale si è tenuta al Cinema Troisi di Roma, altro luogo simbolico della cultura contemporanea, e la presidenza di giuria è stata affidata a Paolo Virzì, tra i registi più autorevoli del panorama italiano.
Nel 2025 il progetto cresce ulteriormente. Il tema scelto è stato “Destinazione Amore – I sentimenti all’epoca della Gen Z”, un titolo capace di intercettare relazioni liquide, nuove fragilità, bisogno di connessione e solitudine contemporanea. I numeri parlano chiaro: oltre 433 opere ricevute, con circa 300 candidature internazionali. La finale si è spostata all’Auditorium Parco della Musica di Roma, segnale evidente di una manifestazione ormai riconosciuta, mentre la presidenza di giuria è stata affidata a Paola Cortellesi, artista amatissima e simbolo di qualità popolare e impegno culturale.
Oggi quel percorso arriva a un nuovo passaggio decisivo. La terza edizione di 24 Frame al Secondo si svolge il 3, 4 e 5 maggio 2026 al Cinema Nuovo Sacher di Roma, la storica sala legata a Nanni Moretti. Non è un dettaglio logistico ma un passaggio simbolico fortissimo. Il Nuovo Sacher rappresenta da anni il cinema d’autore italiano, il rigore artistico, la libertà di sguardo. Ospitare qui le finali significa riconoscere il valore del progetto.
A presiedere la giuria quest’anno sarà Valerio Mastandrea, attore e regista tra i più rispettati del nostro cinema, interprete capace di unire popolarità, profondità e attenzione costante verso i giovani linguaggi.
Il titolo scelto per questa edizione è forse il più urgente di tutti: “La mia battaglia – Il conflitto fuori e dentro di sé per la Generazione Z.” Un titolo che fotografa con precisione il tempo in cui viviamo. Parla dell’ansia diffusa, dell’identità da costruire, delle pressioni sociali, del futuro incerto, delle guerre interiori, del bisogno di essere ascoltati. È una traccia profondamente contemporanea, che trasforma il festival in qualcosa di più di un concorso, un osservatorio emotivo sul presente.
Il programma delle finali prevede tre giornate intense di proiezioni con i migliori cortometraggi semifinalisti, film finalisti in concorso, opere fuori concorso, menzioni speciali, premiazioni e film stranieri. Dai titoli selezionati emerge un universo creativo vastissimo: disagio generazionale, relazioni tossiche, alienazione, rabbia sociale, ironia, amore, identità, vuoto, ricerca di sé.
Forse la frase più commovente resta quella raccontata dalla madre di Francesco: “Francesco diceva sempre: “ Mi piacerebbe lasciare un segno.” Noi lo facciamo vivere così, accendiamo nostro figlio prendendoci cura di altri.”
Dentro queste parole c’è l’anima vera di 24 Frame al Secondo. Non un memoriale fermo nel passato, ma una scintilla che continua a muoversi. Questo progetto compie un gesto molto più serio, consegna loro una macchina da presa, li rende autori, non oggetti del discorso.
Ed è forse questo il valore più grande dell’idea nata da Luca Valdiserri e Paola Di Caro, aver trasformato il dolore in possibilità, la memoria in movimento, l’assenza in futuro.
Nato dal ricordo di Francesco, oggi il progetto vive come spazio libero per centinaia di giovani registi che cercano il loro primo sguardo sul mondo.
E forse non esiste omaggio più grande di questo: quando una vita spezzata continua ad aprire strade agli altri.
