On July 29, 2026, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation formally charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with aiding terrorist activity and placed him on an international wanted list, an offense carrying a potential sentence of life imprisonment.
Abroad, he is known as something else entirely: the mystery billionaire with the look of a model, the monk in black who owns the secrets of a billion Telegram users, and a man now wanted in jail by at least two countries.
Pavel Durov is 40, worth $13 billion, holds four passports — Russia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the UAE, and France — and has no permanent address. He doesn’t eat meat. He doesn’t drink. He doesn’t do coffee.
He was born October 10, 1984, in Leningrad, to two philology professors. A boy who learned to code at 11 from his older brother Nikolai, a two-time Math Olympiad champion. At 22, while studying at Saint Petersburg State University, he built VKontakte in his dorm room. It became Russia’s Facebook.
In 2014, he left Moscow for Dubai to become independent. But he ended up under the radar of everybody.
He built Telegram in exile. Thirty employees. No office. No HR. No headquarters. Just speed and privacy. It now lives on one in eight phones on the planet. Your family group chat, a war zone, a protest — all in the same app, all encrypted, all his.
That’s what made him untouchable. And that’s what made him a target.
In Paris, he had problems because his app is too private. On August 24, 2024, his private jet landed at Le Bourget and French commandos were waiting on the tarmac. Four days in custody, twelve charges — because Telegram refused to moderate and refused to cooperate.
In Moscow, he is now wanted because his app is too private for the other side.
Two countries. Two opposite reasons. The same accusation: you built something no one can control, maybe not even he himself.
Telegram’s response to the latest warrant was pure Durov. No press release. Just a photograph. Him. In black. Middle finger up.
He posted last week that he was in Georgia. He might be in Dubai tomorrow. He might be nowhere.
And somewhere, he is still doing his 300 push-ups.

A Parigi ha avuto problemi perché la sua app è troppo privata. Il 24 agosto 2024, il suo jet privato è atterrato a Le Bourget e i commando francesi lo aspettavano sulla pista. Quattro giorni in custodia, dodici capi d’accusa — perché Telegram si è rifiutato di moderare e di collaborare.
A Mosca è ora ricercato perché la sua app è troppo privata per l’altra parte.
Due paesi. Due ragioni opposte. La stessa accusa: hai costruito qualcosa che nessuno può controllare, forse nemmeno lui stesso.

La scorsa settimana ha postato di essere in Georgia. Domani potrebbe essere a Dubai. Potrebbe essere da nessuna parte.
