Mamdani takes the lead in New York promising a radical change
Throngs of supporters braved the extreme cold Thursday afternoon in lower Manhattan to attend the inauguration of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who lead a historic campaign to guide the nation’s largest city and captured global attention.
“I have been told that this is the occasion to reset expectations, that I should use this opportunity to encourage the people of New York to ask for little and expect even less,” Mamdani said after being sworn in by Sen. Bernie Sanders, a fellow democratic socialist. “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations.” Sanders, praising Mamdani’s campaign, told the crowd that “When people stand up, there’s nothing we cannot accomplish.”
Mamdani, a 34-year-old immigrant from Uganda, makes history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, first South Asian mayor and the youngest mayor to hold the high-profile office in more than a century.
Mamdani spoke glowingly of the city he now leads, promising to be a mayor to all New Yorkers as he recalled taking the subway and bus as a teenager to his high school in the Bronx and his first date with his wife, Rama Duwaji, in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park.
“Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed, but never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try,” Mamdani said. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical.”

Giovedì pomeriggio, una folla di sostenitori ha sfidato il freddo estremo nella parte bassa di Manhattan per partecipare all’insediamento del sindaco di New York City Zohran Mamdani, il socialista democratico che ha condotto una campagna storica per guidare la città più grande della nazione e ha catturato l’attenzione globale.
“Mi è stato detto che questa è l’occasione per ridefinire le aspettative, che dovrei cogliere questa opportunità per incoraggiare i newyorkesi a chiedere poco e ad aspettarsi ancora meno”, ha detto Mamdani dopo aver prestato giuramento davanti al senatore Bernie Sanders, suo collega socialista democratico.

Mamdani, un immigrato 34enne proveniente dall’Uganda, entra nella storia come primo sindaco musulmano della città, primo sindaco sudasiatico e sindaco più giovane a ricoprire questa carica di alto profilo in oltre un secolo.
Mamdani ha parlato con entusiasmo della città che ora guida, promettendo di essere un sindaco per tutti i newyorkesi, mentre ricordava quando da adolescente prendeva la metropolitana e l’autobus per andare al liceo nel Bronx e il suo primo appuntamento con sua moglie, Rama Duwaji, al McCarren Park di Brooklyn.
“A partire da oggi, governeremo in modo espansivo e audace. Potremmo non avere sempre successo, ma nessuno potrà mai accusarci di non aver avuto il coraggio di provarci”, ha affermato Mamdani. “Sono stato eletto come socialista democratico e governerò come socialista democratico. Non abbandonerò i miei principi per paura di essere considerato radicale”.

“A coloro che insistono nel dire che l’era del grande governo è finita, ascoltate bene ciò che sto per dire: il Comune non esiterà più a usare il proprio potere per migliorare la vita dei newyorkesi”, ha affermato.
