ROME — Cinema found its voice in 1927. Nearly a century later, apparently, some people still haven’t figured out when it’s better not to say anything.

At the Rome Film Festival, amid flashing cameras, glamorous gowns, and international stars, all it took was a single flower to turn a sweet moment into a spectacle considerably less sophisticated than anything playing on the silver screen.

At the center of it all, through no fault of her own, was Jenna Ortega, the face of “Wednesday “!and one of the most beloved actresses of her generation. On October 17, 2026, Ortega was in Rome to promote Klara and the Sun, directed by great singer Taika Waititi and based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Everything was going according to the usual red-carpet script: smiles, photographs, and greetings with fans. Then, a young admirer tried to hand her a toy flower.

Romantic? Perhaps. Thoughtful? Absolutely.

Dangerous? Only to someone apparently suffering from a severe allergy to good manners.

One Flower, One Obscene Remark, and a Red Carpet Stripped of Its Elegance

As the young man attempted to present his gift, another man at the scene decided to intervene. Not with a greeting, a question, or even a compliment. That would have been far too conventional.

Instead, he shouted at the actress in English:

“Don’t take the flower. He masturbated on this flower.”

Apparently not content with that little display of sophistication, he continued, claiming the flower was dangerous and even declaring that he had “saved” Jenna’s life.

The scene was so absurd that even the writers of Wednesday might have asked for a more believable rewrite.

Except this wasn’t a scripted scene. This was an actress meeting her fans on red carpet of Rome Film  and a young admirer suddenly finding himself publicly associated with an unsubstantiated sexual allegation.

And calling it a joke would be an act of generosity it hardly deserves.

The Video That Sparked Outrage Among Fans

The footage began circulating online, prompting an angry response from Jenna Ortega’s international fanbase.

Much of the criticism focused on the gratuitous nature of the remark and the humiliation of the young man holding the flower, who found himself unwillingly dragged into an uncomfortable show.

Across social media discussions, some users described the incident as a calculated attempt to generate views. Others questioned how anyone could think it appropriate to make such a remark to someone who had absolutely no reason to expect it.

As for Jenna Ortega, the footage appears to show the actress visibly uncomfortable.

Red Carpet or a Stage for Inflated Egos?

There was a time when getting noticed on a red carpet required talent, a compelling story, or at the very least, an intelligent question.

These days, judging by certain incidents, some people apparently believe all it takes is shouting the most inappropriate thing imaginable and hoping a smartphone captures the moment. But getting people to talk about you doesn’t mean you actually have anything worth saying. A red carpet is also a professional environment. Photographers, journalists, and media professionals attend these events to cover cinema, document important moments, and shine a spotlight on the films and artists being celebrated.

Access is regulated, space is limited, and professionalism should be nonnegotiable.

Which brings us to a rather interesting question.

We do not know whether the man behind this questionable performance held a press credential. Frankly, we hope he didn’t. But if he did, one might reasonably ask: What exactly are the criteria for granting access to an international film festival when legitimate media outlets dedicated to serious coverage of cinema and culture are being left outside?

A press credential should be an opportunity to report on cinema, not a backstage pass to turn a red carpet into a showcase for vulgarity.

After all, being allowed onto a red carpet doesn’t necessarily mean you’re worthy of standing on one.

And while we’re at it, a small observation: owning a smartphone does not automatically make someone a comedian, just as standing a few feet away from a celebrity does not magically turn every ridiculous remark into a story worth telling.

Sometimes, all it does is demonstrate just how embarrassing the desperate pursuit of attention can become.

Jenna Ortega and the Unintended Irony of an Evening Dedicated to Empathy

There’s a particularly striking irony to this entire episode.

Jenna Ortega came to Rome to present Klara and the Sun, a story that explores humanity, empathy, and the importance of genuine human connection.

During the film’s presentation, the actress spoke about the challenges of human relationships in the age of social media and artificial intelligence, highlighting just how difficult meaningful interaction can sometimes be.

And yet, during a simple encounter with fans, a young man offering perhaps the most innocent and human gesture imaginable — a flower — suddenly found himself at the center of a vulgar provocation.

The Flower Remains. So Does the Embarrassment.

This story doesn’t require grand statements, manufactured outrage, or a trial by social media.

The facts, as far as they can be documented, speak loudly enough.

A young man wanted to give an actress a flower. Another man chose to turn that moment into a sexually charged provocation. And thousands of people were able to witness the result through their screens.

Some may dismiss the incident as nothing more than a joke that fell flat.

But genuine humor requires intelligence. And more importantly, it should come with certain boundaries, especially when it risks humiliating someone who never agreed to become the punchline.

As for the pursuit of fame, there’s one rather unromantic truth worth remembering: being remembered isn’t always a compliment.

Jenna Ortega came to Rome to celebrate cinema. A young man came to give her a flower. Someone else decided to steal the spotlight.

Did he succeed? The video certainly attracted attention.

Unfortunately, there’s a world of difference between stealing the show and making a complete fool of yourself. And no red carpet, no matter how prestigious, can cover that up.

Si rivolge all’attrice in inglese e grida:

«Don’t take the flower. He masturbated on this flower».

Red carpet o palcoscenico dell’ego?
