This morning at Rai’s studios in Milan, Stefano De Martino unveiled the rules for his first Sanremo Festival. Twenty-four competing artists, a new Performance Night that will select Italy’s Eurovision representative, online voting through RaiPlay and restrictions on artificial intelligence. On Auto-Tune, his position is clear: “This is a song competition, not a singing competition, but you still have to know how to sing.”
MILAN — This morning, September 21, a press conference was held at Studio M2 of Rai’s Production Center on Via Mecenate in Milan to present the rules for the 2027 Sanremo Music Festival.
The new format was unveiled by Stefano De Martino, host and artistic director of the upcoming edition, alongside Claudio Fasulo, Deputy Director of Rai’s Prime Time Entertainment division and a longtime key figure in the Festival’s organization.
The Festival, scheduled to run February 16–20, 2027, will feature 24 competing artists in a single category. The winner of Sarà Sanremo 2026 will also earn a direct spot in the competition.
But the biggest news of the morning is that De Martino has gone well beyond making a few adjustments to the rules. His first Sanremo introduces significant changes involving the number of competing artists, the Eurovision Song Contest, the voting system and even the relationship between music and artificial intelligence.
Twenty-four artists. De Martino promises: there will be 24
The first number on the table is the number of contestants.
De Martino made it clear that this time there will be no last-minute expansion of the lineup:
“There will be 24, even though everyone keeps telling me, ‘Oh, just wait, you’ll end up adding more.’”
The decision is tied to the Festival’s new structure. A smaller lineup should allow more room for each artist and, above all, make possible the major new feature planned for Friday night.
Under the new format, all contestants will also take part in Performance Night, one of the elements that most clearly sets Sanremo 2027 apart from previous editions.
Sanremo and Eurovision go their separate ways
Winning the Sanremo Music Festival will no longer necessarily mean representing Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest.
On Friday, February 19, Sanremo will debut its new Performance Night. All 24 artists will return to the stage with their competing songs, but they will be able to present them through different interpretive, musical and visual approaches compared with the other nights of the Festival.
The arrangement, performance and staging can therefore all contribute to creating a presentation conceived with a stronger visual dimension.
Italy’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 will be selected by the Popular Jury and the new International Jury of Experts, made up of prominent figures from the international music and entertainment industries.
The winner of Performance Night will represent Rai and Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027.
De Martino summarized the new structure of Sanremo week this way: Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday will focus on the main competition, Thursday will be devoted to covers, and Friday will determine who goes to Eurovision.
For the first time, Sanremo could therefore end with two different winners: the winner of the Festival and the artist chosen to represent Italy at Eurovision.
It is a separation that significantly changes the relationship between the two music competitions as it has developed in recent years.
Sanremo moves further into the digital era: voting comes to RaiPlay
Among the changes announced at the press conference is one that directly involves viewers.
At Sanremo 2027, audiences will also be able to vote online through RaiPlay.
The new system will operate alongside traditional televoting. Online voting will be free and will require users to register, while Rai is still working on the technical details and how the different voting methods will be balanced.
The move brings the Festival even closer to audiences who watch Rai programming on smartphones and digital platforms, transforming RaiPlay from a place to simply watch content into an active tool for participating in the competition.
Artificial intelligence: Sanremo draws a line
Then there is an issue that now cuts across music, film, television and publishing: artificial intelligence.
The 2027 rules establish that competing songs must be an expression of human creativity. AI systems will not be permitted when their use replaces, alters or fundamentally distorts the creative contribution of songwriters and artists.
During the press conference, De Martino explained the thinking behind the decision.
The goal is to put the human element back at the heart of the Festival, restoring the value of the time it takes to learn how to write, play, sing and create a song.
But one inevitable question remains: how will organizers determine whether artificial intelligence has been used?
De Martino acknowledged the complexity of the issue and explained that Rai will make software and professionals available to carry out the necessary checks.
The direction, however, is clear: at a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly pervasive, Sanremo is attempting to put the human craft of making music back at center stage.
Auto-Tune is allowed but not to hide an inability to sing
While the rules draw a clear line on artificial intelligence, the position on Auto-Tune is different.
There will be no outright ban.
De Martino explained that eliminating it entirely would automatically exclude part of contemporary music, since genres such as rap and trap also use Auto-Tune as a stylistic device.
In those cases, Auto-Tune will continue to have a place on the Ariston stage.
It is a different matter, however, when the technology is used solely to disguise a performer’s actual vocal abilities.
On this point, De Martino delivered one of the clearest statements of the press conference:
“This is a song competition, not a singing competition, but you still have to know how to sing.”
The remark captures the balance the new artistic director appears to be seeking: Sanremo should not become a vocal talent show, but neither should it forget that performers sing live on the Ariston stage.
Covers: a competition within the competition
The traditional Covers Night, scheduled for Thursday, February 18, will also have its own distinct identity.
The artists will perform songs from the Italian or international repertoire alongside Italian or international guest performers.
The covers competition will also have its own ranking and its own winner, without affecting the final outcome of the Festival.
Friday will instead be entirely devoted to Performance Night and the selection of Italy’s Eurovision representative.
The juries are changing too
The new rules introduce a multi-layered voting system.
Throughout the week, voting will involve the Popular Jury, the Press Room, TV and Web Jury, and the Radio Jury.
Performance Night will also introduce the new International Jury of Experts, which, together with the Popular Jury, will determine who represents Italy at Eurovision.
The Festival’s final ranking will be determined by the results of the nights that count toward the main competition. At the end of Saturday’s final, the highest-ranked artists will advance to the last round, where the public vote, combined with the scores accumulated earlier in the competition, will help determine the winner of Sanremo 2027.
First the artists, then everything else
Many pieces of the puzzle are still missing, beginning with the names of the 24 competing artists.
Submissions must reach Rai by November 23, while the lineup may be announced beginning November 29, 2026.
Those names will ultimately reveal what kind of Festival Stefano De Martino has in mind, although this morning’s press conference has already offered the first clear indication of its identity.
Sanremo 2027 wants to change without losing what makes Sanremo, Sanremo.
It reduces the number of competing artists to give them more room. It brings voting to RaiPlay. It introduces a night built around the visual and performative dimension of a song. It separates winning Sanremo from the race to Eurovision. It accepts Auto-Tune when it is part of an artist’s musical language, while attempting to draw a line when artificial intelligence replaces human creativity.
There are still five months to go before the lights come on at the Ariston, but Stefano De Martino’s first Sanremo has already begun not with the names, but with the rules.

Sull’autotune la linea è chiara: «Questa è una gara di canzoni, non una gara di canto, ma bisogna anche saper cantare».
MILANO — Questa mattina, 21 settembre, nello Studio M2 del Centro di Produzione Rai di via Mecenate a Milano, si è tenuta la conferenza stampa di presentazione del regolamento del Festival di Sanremo 2027.
A illustrare alla stampa le novità sono stati Stefano De Martino, conduttore e direttore artistico della prossima edizione, affiancato da Claudio Fasulo, vicedirettore della Direzione Intrattenimento Prime Time Rai e da anni tra le figure centrali della macchina organizzativa del Festival.
Il Festival, in programma dal 16 al 20 febbraio 2027, avrà 24 artisti in gara in un’unica categoria. Tra loro ci sarà anche il vincitore di Sarà Sanremo 2026, ammesso direttamente alla competizione.
Ma la vera notizia della mattinata è che De Martino non si è limitato a presentare qualche ritocco al regolamento. Il suo primo Sanremo introduce cambiamenti che riguardano il numero degli artisti, l’Eurovision Song Contest, il sistema di voto e persino il rapporto tra musica e intelligenza artificiale.
Ventiquattro artisti. De Martino promette: resteranno 24
Il primo numero messo sul tavolo è proprio quello dei concorrenti.
De Martino ha assicurato che questa volta non ci saranno allargamenti in corsa:
«Resteranno 24, nonostante chiunque mi dica: “Ah, ma tanto poi vedrai che allargherai”».
La ragione è legata alla struttura stessa del Festival. Un cast più contenuto dovrebbe permettere di concedere maggiore spazio agli artisti e, soprattutto, rendere possibile la grande novità prevista per il venerdì sera.
La nuova architettura prevede infatti che tutti i concorrenti siano protagonisti anche della Serata Performance, uno degli elementi che distinguono maggiormente Sanremo 2027 dalle edizioni precedenti.
Sanremo ed Eurovision prendono due strade diverse
Vincere il Festival di Sanremo non significherà necessariamente rappresentare l’Italia all’Eurovision Song Contest.
Venerdì 19 febbraio debutterà la Serata Performance. I 24 artisti torneranno sul palco con la propria canzone, ma potranno proporla attraverso modalità interpretative, esecutive e sceniche differenti rispetto alle altre serate.
Arrangiamento, esecuzione e messa in scena potranno quindi contribuire alla costruzione di una performance pensata anche nella sua dimensione visiva.
A decidere chi rappresenterà l’Italia all’Eurovision Song Contest 2027 saranno la Giuria Popolare e la nuova Giuria Internazionale di Esperti, composta da personalità di rilievo del mondo della musica e dello spettacolo internazionale.
Il vincitore della Serata Performance rappresenterà Rai e l’Italia all’Eurovision Song Contest 2027.
De Martino ha sintetizzato così la nuova settimana sanremese: martedì, mercoledì e sabato saranno legati alla gara principale, giovedì alle cover e venerdì alla competizione che porterà all’Eurovision.
Per la prima volta, quindi, Sanremo potrebbe concludersi con due nomi differenti: il vincitore del Festival e l’artista scelto per rappresentare l’Italia all’Eurovision.
Una separazione che cambia profondamente il rapporto costruito negli ultimi anni tra i due eventi musicali.
Sanremo entra ancora di più nell’era digitale: arriva il voto su RaiPlay
Tra le novità annunciate durante la conferenza stampa ce n’è una che non riguarda soltanto gli artisti, ma direttamente il pubblico.
A Sanremo 2027 si potrà votare anche online attraverso RaiPlay.
Il nuovo sistema affiancherà il televoto tradizionale. Il voto digitale sarà gratuito e richiederà la registrazione dell’utente, mentre Rai sta lavorando agli aspetti tecnici e al bilanciamento delle diverse modalità.
Il Festival prova così ad avvicinarsi ancora di più al pubblico che segue programmi e contenuti Rai attraverso smartphone, piattaforme e dispositivi digitali, trasformando RaiPlay da semplice luogo di fruizione a strumento di partecipazione alla gara.
Intelligenza artificiale, Sanremo mette un limite
C’è poi una questione che ormai attraversa musica, cinema, televisione ed editoria: l’intelligenza artificiale.
Il regolamento 2027 stabilisce che le canzoni debbano essere espressione della creatività umana. Non sarà consentito utilizzare sistemi di intelligenza artificiale quando questi comportino la sostituzione, l’alterazione o lo snaturamento del contributo creativo degli autori e degli artisti.
De Martino, durante la conferenza, ha spiegato la filosofia alla base della decisione.
L’obiettivo è riportare il tratto umano al centro del Festival, recuperando il valore del tempo necessario per imparare a scrivere, suonare, cantare e costruire una canzone.
Ma resta una domanda inevitabile: come sarà possibile capire se l’intelligenza artificiale è stata utilizzata?
De Martino non ha nascosto la complessità del problema e ha spiegato che Rai metterà a disposizione software e professionisti per effettuare le verifiche necessarie.
La direzione scelta è comunque evidente: in un momento storico dominato dall’intelligenza artificiale, Sanremo prova a riportare al centro l’artigianalità della musica.
Autotune sì, ma non per nascondere chi non sa cantare
Se sull’intelligenza artificiale il regolamento stabilisce un confine preciso, sull’autotune la posizione è differente.
Nessun divieto assoluto.
De Martino ha spiegato che eliminarlo significherebbe escludere automaticamente una parte della musica contemporanea, perché generi come rap e trap ne fanno anche un uso stilistico.
In quel caso l’autotune continuerà ad avere cittadinanza sul palco dell’Ariston.
Diverso, invece, quando diventa uno strumento utilizzato esclusivamente per mascherare le reali capacità vocali di un interprete.
Su questo punto De Martino ha pronunciato una delle frasi più nette della conferenza:
«Questa è una gara di canzoni, non una gara di canto, ma bisogna anche saper cantare».
Una frase che riassume bene il difficile equilibrio che il nuovo direttore artistico sembra voler cercare: non trasformare Sanremo in un talent vocale, ma neppure dimenticare che sul palco dell’Ariston si canta dal vivo.
Cover: una gara nella gara
Anche la tradizionale serata delle cover, prevista per giovedì 18 febbraio, avrà una propria identità.
Gli artisti interpreteranno un brano appartenente al repertorio italiano o internazionale, esibendosi insieme a ospiti italiani o stranieri.
La gara delle cover avrà inoltre una propria classifica e un proprio vincitore, senza incidere sul risultato finale del Festival.
Il venerdì sarà invece interamente dedicato alla Serata Performance e alla scelta del rappresentante italiano per l’Eurovision.
Cambiano anche le giurie
Il nuovo regolamento introduce un sistema articolato di votazione.
Nel corso della settimana entreranno in gioco la Giuria Popolare, la Giuria della Sala Stampa, TV e Web e la Giuria delle Radio.
Per la Serata Performance entrerà invece in scena anche la nuova Giuria Internazionale di Esperti, che insieme alla Giuria Popolare determinerà chi rappresenterà l’Italia all’Eurovision.
La classifica finale del Festival sarà costruita attraverso i risultati delle serate valide per la gara principale. Al termine della finale, i migliori classificati accederanno alla fase conclusiva e il voto del pubblico contribuirà, insieme al punteggio accumulato precedentemente, a determinare il vincitore di Sanremo 2027.
Prima gli artisti, poi il resto
Mancano ancora molti tasselli, a cominciare dai nomi dei 24 artisti.
Le proposte dovranno arrivare alla Rai entro il 23 novembre, mentre il cast potrà essere annunciato a partire dal 29 novembre 2026.
Sarà da quei nomi che capiremo fino in fondo quale Festival abbia in mente Stefano De Martino, anche se dopo la conferenza stampa di questa mattina una prima identità è già emersa.
Sanremo 2027 vuole cambiare senza rinnegare Sanremo.
Riduce il numero degli artisti per concedere loro più spazio. Apre il voto a RaiPlay. Introduce una serata costruita anche sulla performance scenica. Separa la vittoria del Festival dalla corsa all’Eurovision. Accetta l’autotune quando appartiene al linguaggio musicale di un artista, ma prova a tracciare un confine davanti all’intelligenza artificiale quando questa sostituisce la creatività umana.
Mancano ancora cinque mesi all’accensione dell’Ariston, ma il primo Sanremo di Stefano De Martino è già cominciato, non dai nomi ma dalle regole.
