WASHINGTON, October 17, 2026 – There are evenings in Washington that don’t talk about politics. They talk about family. The one for the gala celebrating the 51st anniversary of the National Italian American Foundation, at the Washington Hilton on Connecticut Avenue, was one of those.

Dim lights in the lobby, the NIAF seal everywhere, a video about Italy looping – and it’s not the usual postcard video. It’s Italy that Italian Americans dream of and that Americans desire: squares, hands kneading dough, factories creating, landscapes that look like a movie.

In the room, the best of both worlds. Italians who arrived from Italy and Italian-Americans of second, third, and fourth generations. Entrepreneurs in suits, girls in long dresses, students with their first good dress. All with the same story on their clothes.

The cult moment of the night has a name and a surname: Sebastian Maniscalco. The Italian-American comedian who fills the arenas, who makes the entire United States laugh by recounting Sunday lunches. He has received the NIAF Dea Roma Special Achievement Award in Entertainment, and an performance that turned a gala dinner into a show.

In a perfect game of balances, beside him Pierroberto Folgiero, representing the other soul of the bridge: the enterprise, leadership, Italy that produces and innovates.

And then, the true guest star: Lombardy, Region of Honor 2026. The NIAF has chosen to honor her everywhere, even at the table. A dinner entirely inspired by her traditions. A very smart way to tell Americans about Italy: not as a single country, but as a mosaic of thousands of different stories. History, gastronomy, design, business. Lombardy is all this.

Behind the sparkle lies the heart of the operation. As every year, part of the gala’s proceeds will fund the Foundation’s educational and cultural programs. Scholarships, projects for young people. Because roots are only useful if they help to grow.

A still more symbolic edition, this one. We are in the year when the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary. 250 years of American history that would not be the same without Italian contribution. A history made of suitcases, construction sites, restaurants, workshops, songs.

51 years after its birth, the NIAF still proves it: it is not a nostalgic club. It is a powerful, glamorous, and concrete network. That takes the pride of its origins and transforms it into the future.
