In the new episode of the Rai docuseries, the story of Agostino Catalano, Paolo Borsellino’s head of security, lives on through the voice of his daughter Rosalinda and the account of those who continue to serve the State.
Thirty-four years after the Via D’Amelio massacre, memory once again becomes story, face and voice. On July 17, a new episode of the docuseries I Ragazzi delle Scorte, titled Agostino, My Father, will be available on RaiPlay and broadcast in late evening on Rai 3. The episode is dedicated to Agostino Catalano, Paolo Borsellino’s head of security, who died in the attack of July 19, 1992, together with the magistrate and the officers Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina and Claudio Traina.
The docuseries brings back to the center not only the account of one of the most dramatic pages in Italian history, but also what remains after a massacre: the families, the memories, the absences, and the weight of a moral legacy that continues to run through Palermo and the entire country.
Agostino Catalano was supposed to be on vacation that day. By a tragic twist of fate, he was called back in order to reach the necessary number of officers for Judge Borsellino’s security detail. It is a detail that makes the sense of a broken destiny even stronger: a life interrupted, an ordinary day suddenly transformed into collective history.
Agostino, My Father chooses to tell this memory through two perspectives: that of Rosalinda Catalano, the officer’s daughter, and that of Salvatore Lo Presti, who still serves today as a security escort officer. Two different voices, united by the same thread: duty, remembrance, and the awareness of what it means to serve the State in places and times marked by risk.
The documentary moves through Palermo, following a path that brings together private memory and public memory. On one side, there is the pain of a daughter who lost her father; on the other, the gaze of someone who continues to do a job that carries responsibility, fear, courage and a sense of duty.
Particularly powerful is the testimony of Rosalinda Catalano, who recalls returning to Via D’Amelio a few days after the massacre:
“The only time I went back to Via D’Amelio was maybe a week later, and everything was still devastated. I went all the way inside, to where the tree is today. The first thing I saw was my father’s shoe, so to this day I still know where my father’s shoe was, where it had remained. And I had also caught sight of a piece of his red duster coat. From that moment on, I no longer had the courage to set foot in Via D’Amelio. It hurts too much. I never had the strength to go back there.”
These words restore the most human dimension of memory. Behind every name engraved in commemorations, there is a family, a daughter, a home, an absence that can never be repaired. The documentary seems to begin precisely here: from the need to remember not only the men who served the institutions, but also the fathers, the colleagues, the people.
The figure of Agostino Catalano is thus removed from the sole definition of “security escort officer” and restored in his full humanity. He was a servant of the State, but also a father. He was part of a protection detail, but also part of a family and human community that, after July 19, 1992, had to live with a permanent wound.
I Ragazzi delle Scorte therefore continues to carry out an important task: telling the stories of the men and women who, alongside the magistrates most exposed in the fight against the Mafia, shared the risk to the very end. They were not secondary figures, nor background presences, but protagonists of a story of courage and responsibility.
At a time when memory often risks becoming ritual, Agostino, My Father brings attention back to the deeper meaning of remembrance: not only to commemorate, but to understand. Not only to name the victims, but to listen to what their absence continues to say.

A trentaquattro anni dalla strage di Via D’Amelio, la memoria torna a farsi racconto, volto, voce. Il 17 luglio arriva su RaiPlay e in seconda serata su Rai 3 un nuovo episodio della docuserie “I Ragazzi delle Scorte”, dal titolo “Agostino, mio padre”, dedicato ad Agostino Catalano, caposcorta di Paolo Borsellino, morto nell’attentato del 19 luglio 1992 insieme al magistrato e agli agenti Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina e Claudio Traina.
La docuserie riporta al centro non solo la cronaca di una delle pagine più drammatiche della storia italiana, ma anche ciò che resta dopo una strage: le famiglie, i ricordi, le assenze, il peso di un’eredità morale che continua ad attraversare Palermo e il Paese intero.
Agostino Catalano, quel giorno, avrebbe dovuto essere in ferie. Fu richiamato per una tragica fatalità, per raggiungere il numero necessario a formare la scorta del giudice Borsellino. Un dettaglio che rende ancora più forte il senso di destino spezzato, di vita interrotta, di quotidianità trasformata improvvisamente in storia collettiva.
“Agostino, mio padre” sceglie di raccontare questa memoria attraverso due prospettive: quella di Rosalinda Catalano, figlia dell’agente, e quella di Salvatore Lo Presti, ancora oggi agente di scorta. Due voci diverse ma unite dallo stesso filo: il dovere, il ricordo, la consapevolezza di ciò che significa servire lo Stato in luoghi e tempi segnati dal rischio.
Il documentario attraversa Palermo seguendo un percorso che unisce memoria privata e memoria pubblica. Da una parte c’è il dolore di una figlia che ha perso il padre; dall’altra c’è lo sguardo di chi continua a svolgere un lavoro che porta con sé responsabilità, paura, coraggio e senso del dovere.
Particolarmente intensa è la testimonianza di Rosalinda Catalano, che ricorda il ritorno in Via D’Amelio pochi giorni dopo la strage:
“L’unica volta che sono tornata in via D’Amelio è stato, forse, una settimana dopo ed era ancora tutto devastato. Sono entrata proprio fino a dentro, dove oggi c’è l’albero. La cosa che ho visto subito è stata la scarpa di mio padre, quindi io so tutt’oggi dov’era la scarpa di mio padre, dov’era rimasta. E avevo intravisto anche un pezzo del suo spolverino rosso. Da quel momento non ebbi più il coraggio di metterci piede in via D’Amelio, mi fa troppo male. Non ho avuto più la forza di andare lì!”
Sono parole che restituiscono la dimensione più umana della memoria. Dietro ogni nome inciso nelle commemorazioni c’è una famiglia, una figlia, una casa, un’assenza che non si ricompone. Il documentario sembra partire proprio da qui: dal bisogno di ricordare non soltanto gli uomini delle istituzioni, ma anche i padri, i colleghi, le persone.
La figura di Agostino Catalano viene così sottratta alla sola definizione di “uomo della scorta” e restituita nella sua interezza. Era un servitore dello Stato, ma anche un padre. Era parte di un dispositivo di protezione, ma anche di una comunità familiare e umana che dopo il 19 luglio 1992 ha dovuto convivere con una ferita permanente.
“I Ragazzi delle Scorte” continua quindi a svolgere un lavoro importante: raccontare chi erano gli uomini e le donne che, accanto ai magistrati più esposti nella lotta alla mafia, hanno condiviso il rischio fino alle estreme conseguenze. Non figure secondarie, non presenze di sfondo, ma protagonisti di una storia di coraggio e responsabilità.
In un tempo in cui la memoria rischia spesso di diventare rituale, “Agostino, mio padre” riporta l’attenzione sul significato profondo del ricordo: non solo celebrare, ma comprendere. Non solo nominare le vittime, ma ascoltare ciò che la loro assenza continua a dire.
