Nonostante le polemiche che hanno investito il leggendario regista ebreo Julian Schnabel e nonostante l’assenza, alla première all’82ª Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, di gran parte dei celebri attori del cast come Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler e Al Pacino, il film In the Hand of Dante ha ricevuto un enorme riconoscimento sia dal pubblico sia dal Festival stesso.
Infatti, Julian Schnabel è stato premiato in una cerimonia speciale prima della proiezione con il Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award, un premio alla carriera nel cinema. A proposito di Schnabel, il direttore della Mostra Alberto Barbera, annunciando il riconoscimento, ha dichiarato:
«Ognuno dei suoi film è un mondo a sé. Nessuno è uguale al precedente o al successivo. E non è un caso che la maggior parte di essi siano ritratti di artisti e appassionate rappresentazioni del processo creativo. Sia generosa che selvaggiamente immaginativa, l’opera cinematografica di Schnabel è un dono al cinema, articolato attraverso un linguaggio assolutamente originale. Il suo nuovo film, In the Hand of Dante, presentato Fuori Concorso alla Mostra di Venezia, è il suo progetto più ambizioso fino ad oggi».
Il film letteralmente ti travolge e ti trascina nel mondo magico, ma anche crudele e grottesco, del cinema di Schnabel, dove un momento ti trovi nella gelida e spietata New York, seguendo le tracce di un gangster interpretato magistralmente da Gerard Butler, e il momento successivo sei in Italia a inseguire i segni leggendari di Dante o a prendere una barca dal Gritti Hotel verso una delle isole lontane di Venezia.
Gli scenari cambiano man mano che il trauma si sviluppa, e lo spettatore finisce col desiderare che il protagonista, un talentuoso scrittore newyorkese interpretato da Oscar Isaac, alla ricerca del manoscritto originale della Divina Commedia di Dante, riesca nella sua missione: trovare il manoscritto e venderlo al miglior acquirente.
Sul suo cammino incontra ostacoli assurdi e combatte i suoi nemici, tra cui un boss interpretato in maniera grottesca e oscura da John Malkovich. Trova anche l’amore, mentre insegue il manoscritto, con un’italiana di nome Giulietta (Gal Gadot), e dovrà lottare con tutte le forze per sopravvivere e poter stare con la donna che ama.
Questo film rappresenta tutto ciò che è “eterno”: dal tempo di Dante fino ai giorni nostri, la lotta per il denaro attraverso la vendita di un’opera d’arte straordinaria, la competizione spietata, le rivalità sulla strada verso il successo e, soprattutto, l’eterna lotta per l’amore e la serenità, che resta il traguardo più difficile da raggiungere. Il genio di Schnabel sta proprio nel combinare storia e modernità in modo grottesco ma semplice, dimostrando che non si può comprendere il presente senza conoscere il passato.
Straordinaria anche l’interpretazione di Jason Momoa, nei panni di un boss mafioso deciso a rubare il manoscritto allo scrittore Nick Tosches, e quella grottesca e magnetica di Sabrina Impacciatore nel ruolo di una Beatrice moderna, direttrice di una biblioteca, che cattura l’attenzione dello spettatore e non la lascia più fino alla fine del film.
In the Hand of Dante è un film dedicato ai grandi temi eterni – l’arte, il denaro, il successo, l’amore e l’eternità – raccontati con la saggezza ebraica del suo leggendario regista. Non ha nulla a che vedere con le politiche del momento, e il successo che ha ottenuto parla da sé.
Regardless all the controversy that stroke the legendary Jewish Film Director Julian Schnabel and despite the fact that most of the famous actors of the cast like Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler and Al Pacino were missing at the premiere’ at the Venice Film Festival 82 the film “In the hand of Dante”received an enormous recognition from the public and also from the Festival of Venice. In fact Julian Schnabel has been awarded in a special ceremony before the beginning of the premiere with a Cartier Prize for a lifetime achievement in cinema. Regarding Julian Schnabel, Venice Film Festival Director Alberto Barbera (announcing that the American painter and director will be awarded the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award) said: “Each of his films is a world unto itself. None are the same as the one before or the one after. Yet it is no coincidence that most of them are portraits of artists and passionate depictions of the artistic process. Both generous and wildly imaginative, Schnabel’s cinematic output is a gift to cinema, articulated through a wholly original language. His new film, In the Hand of Dante, presented Out of Competition at the Venice Film Festival, is his most ambitious project yet.” The film literally sweeps you of your feet and carries you away to the magical but also cruel and grotesque world of Schnabel’s cinema where at one moment you are in a ruthless cold New York following the footsteps of a gangster played marvellously by Gerard Butler and the other moment you are in Italy chasing Dante’s legendary traits or getting a boat ride from the Gritti hotel to one of the far away islands in Venice.
The scenery changes as the trauma evolves and you really want the leading hero, a talented writer from New York played by Oscar Isaac looking for the original manuscript of Dante’s Divina Commedia to succeed in his mission to find the manuscript and to find the buyer for it. On his way the writer finds absurd obstacles and fights off his enemies such as the boss played by John Malkovich in a grotesque and obscured way. He finds love while looking for Dante’s manuscript for an Italian Giulietta played by Gal Gadot and has to really fight to survive to be able to be with the woman he loves. This movie represents everything that is “eternal” from the times of Dante to nowadays a fight for money through selling of an extraordinary piece of art, cruel competition and rivalry on the way to money and success and the eternal fight for love and serenity that is the hardest goal to achieve. Julien Schnabel’s genius is in combining the history with modern times in a grotesque but simple way and proving that you can’t understand your present without knowing the past. The amazing performance of Jason Momoa in a role of a mafia boss who wants to steal the manuscript from the writer Nick Tosches and the grotesque performance of Sabrina Impacciatore in the role of modern Beatrice who is a director of a library captures the viewers attention and doesn’t let go right to the very end of the movie. The film “In the hand of Dante” is dedicated to the eternal subjects such as art, money, success, love and eternity and all described and told with the Jewish wisdom of the legendary director and has nothing in common with politics of the moment and the success of the movie speaks for itself.
